BYD reveals all-electric seven-seat SUV
Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD has unveiled a new battery-electric version of its large Sealion 8 SUV. Expected to potentially wear the Atto 8 badge in export markets, the three-row family wagon claims a driving range of up to 653km alongside ultra-fast charging tech capable of topping up the battery in around nine minutes under ideal conditions.
Impact on the Australian family EV market
If confirmed for Australia, the zero-emission Sealion 8 will give local buyers a compelling alternative to premium seven-seat electric models like the Kia EV9. With the federal government's New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) pushing automakers to expand clean-car portfolios down under, a large family EV from BYD would accelerate mainstream adoption. Furthermore, eligible electric SUVs under the local Luxury Car Tax threshold continue to benefit from Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) exemptions for fleet and salary sacrifice buyers.
Considerations for prospective Aussie buyers
While official local launch timing and Australian dollar pricing remain unconfirmed, prospective buyers should note that official WLTP range figures may differ from initial domestic market claims. Standard CCS2 charging compatibility will ensure seamless connection across Australia's public fast-charging networks.
